A suspect in the shooting of a Dorchester convenience store owner has been ordered held without bail.
Jarris Charley pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday to charges of armed robbery, armed assault with intent to murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
“He went to that individual saying ‘give me your money now, don't make me hurt you in front of your son,'” the prosecuting attorney said. “After he grabbed the money from the cash register that is when he shot the victim in the front area of his body and fled the scene.”
Police say the owner of the D&D convenience store was shot in the upper body at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Boston Medical Center and is expected to survive.
The defense attorney questioned the identification of Charley as the shooter.
Police say there were three shootings in the city Tuesday night, including one near a Dorchester polling place.
“It's disturbing. Knock on wood the last couple weeks have been very quiet,” Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said.
